The Tomorrow When The War Began movie takes place in a rural Australian town called Wirrawee. Seven teens decide to go away on a camping trip to a pristine, remote area of bushland the locals call Hell. But Hell is nothing like the name implies, it is a beautiful idyllic piece of wilderness where the teens enjoy a few days away from their families. While they’re busy enjoying themselves, many of the townspeople of Wirrawee are taking part in the annual Commemorative Day festivities at the local showground.
One night while they’re camping, the teens notice groups of planes flying overhead and though they think it unusual, put it down to maybe being aeronautical displays that could be part of the town’s Commemorative Day celebrations.
Movie Tomorrow When The War Began continues
However when they return from their trip, they realise what the planes were actually being used for; invading their town and the country. When they reach their homes they are shaken by the discovery that their parents aren’t home, their pets are dying from dehydration, and the place looks deserted. Some of the group go into town under the cover of nightfall to see if they can find out what’s going on. They soon discover an unknown enemy force has invaded their town and have their families held captive at the local showground.
The Tomorrow movie continues on with the group deciding to fight back against the enemy in any way they can. They come up with a brilliant plan to stop the enemy force from being able to enter their town by blowing up the main bridge linking the road to their town.
There’s lots of action in Tomorrow When The War Began the movie
In Tomorrow When The War Began the movie, there is a lot of action that is much more ‘in your face’ than the book describes, with some scenes having you on the edge of your seat. There have been some changes made to the original story in the novel, as one would expect when trying to fit the book into 104 minutes of cinema. Having said that, Stuart Beattie goes to great lengths to keep the Tomorrow, When The War Began movie true to the book’s major themes ie how a group of young teens react and then cope with the invasion of their country; and how they rally together to try to do what they can to compromise the enemy force’s stronghold on their town.
